art$tart wny
is an entry level mini-grant that partners artists with teachers to make
a difference in the educational & artistic lives of students.
art$tart wny are grants up to $2500 for any cultural organization, public
or private pre-K through 12 school in Erie and Niagara Counties.
Q. If my project received funding before, am I eligible to apply
for a second year of funding?
A. Those projects that received entry level funding may apply for a second
year of funding; a new element is a plus.
Q. Can I apply for art$tart funding so I can take my students to
a local play?
A. No.
Q. Can I apply for art$tart funding to take my students to a local
play if the performance is used as part of the residency work in the classroom?
A. Yes, if the application makes a case for the need of the performance to
the project that is done in the classroom. Remember, each project must have
at least three sessions with a teaching artist in the classroom. So, if the
students are studying Hudson River authors, then a trip to TOY to see a performance
of Legend of Sleepy Hollow might make sense; if you’re studying the
history of the 1960’s, then a trip to Albright Knox Art Gallery to
look at Pop Art could be an integral component.
Q. Some agencies have developed programs. Can I apply for
art$tart funds to buy one of their programs?
A. No. Every project must be custom designed by your team.
Q. I’m a teaching artist/cultural organization and want to
work in the Buffalo Public Schools. Is it possible without having filed
the External Providers application?
A. Check with the principal at the school in which you wish to work.
Q. What does “in-kind” mean?
A. Almost anything the school provides that is used by the project (copies,
release time, art supplies, sheet music, etc.) are considered “in-kind” donations.
Q. How do I find out my political representatives?
A. You will find the links on the online proposal.
Q. How do I get my money?
A. Checks must be made payable to a not-for-profit entity [501(c)(3)]. If
you are an individual teaching artist, the school or an umbrella organization
must receive the funds. It is important to work through this before submitting
your proposal.
Q. What happens if I’m not funded?
A. This is a competitive process and an independent panel makes the difficult
decisions to select projects and grant limited funds. Ask for panel comments
to improve your proposal for the future. If you feel your project did not
receive fair treatment, you may request an appeal within two weeks. Contact
the Coordinator.
Q. When will I be notified?
A. Recipients will be called one month after the deadline.
Q. Is there a final report?
A. Yes. A brief final report is due July 31. Please refer to the final
report template.
Q. Wait! How do I ask a different question?
A. Please contact art$tart at info@capcbufflo.org or
call 834-5777.
